About the Class

Commercial vessel traffic lanes in the Salish Sea overlay one of the world's largest and most biologically rich inland seas - and the Southern Resident killer whales' critical habitat. Washington State has the fifth highest oil refining capacity in the nation, with five refineries located in the Salish Sea, in addition to major shipping terminals in Tacoma, Seattle, and Everett. British Columbia's Port of Vancouver is the largest port in Canada with 27 major marine cargo terminals.

There are at least 22 new or expanding terminal and refinery projects that have been proposed or permitted or were recently completed. If all of the proposed new and expanding projects are permitted and developed, this would result in at least a 25 percent increase in large, ocean-going commercial vessel traffic transits to and from Salish Sea ports and fossil fuel facilities, as compared with 2020 transits.
